A varied autumn in the Tannheim Valley

Updated 11.08.2022

In the Tannheimer Tal, the "most beautiful hiking region in Austria", the title says it all! Even in autumn, hiking enthusiasts have a 300-kilometre network of hiking trails at their disposal. The special thing about it: the region offers hikes on three levels, so that all guests are guaranteed to find the right tour for them. In addition, visitors can become part of the exciting traditions of the idyllic Tyrolean high valley in autumn with the Talfeiertag and the Almabtrieben.

Also in autumn, the Tannheimer Tal offers many options to make your holiday in the mountains unique, varied and unforgettable.

Trinity for hiking enthusiastsTheTannheimer Tal was awarded the title of "Austria's most beautiful hiking region" in 2019, and not without reason. A special feature of this holiday paradise are the three levels on which you can hike like a dream. The range of difficulty extends from easy, flat paths to challenging, alpine via ferratas, which are spread over more than 300 kilometres of hiking trails. So there is just as much for beginners as there is for climbing and hiking experts. The first and lowest level runs along relaxed walking trails that lead from place to place. Visitors can discover many inviting places and lakes, enjoy nature and the surroundings and leave everyday life behind. The second level is a little higher. Here, panoramic and themed trails as well as paths are waiting to be explored. This level can be reached comfortably by mountain railway. The third and thus last area in the Tannheimer Tal hiking area contains mainly quite challenging routes and via ferratas. All experienced mountaineers and climbing professionals will find the right challenge there!

ClimbingSpeciallyin the climbing scene, the Tannheimer Tal has enjoyed an excellent reputation for years, especially with the names "Gimpel", "Rote Flüh", "Aggenstein" or "Läuferspitze". The summits to be conquered are situated in an absolutely quiet location on the sunny side of the valley and reward the ambitious conquerors of gravity with a breathtaking view of the mountain panorama. Here, too, there is something for everyone: from simple single-rope routes to alpine multi-rope routes, every climber's heart beats faster here. If unsupervised climbing is too dangerous for you, you can book a mountain guide to learn various climbing techniques from trained staff. Alternatively, from the beginning of July you can practise safely under secured conditions in the Tannheimer Tal Climbing Forest!

Exciting events in autumnIn addition tothe numerous recreational and sporting opportunities in the region, various traditions and events also make the area unique. For example, the annual Valley Day takes place on 17 September. On this occasion, people commemorate the Tyrolean defence of the valley from the attacking French soldiers in 1796. On the same day, starting at 9 a.m., the festive service takes place in the Tannheim parish church, which is the second largest of its kind in the diocese of Innsbruck. This is followed by a festive procession through the village. Another spectacle is the Almabtriebe, which takes place every year in autumn. During this tradition, the cows and young cattle return from their stay on the alpine pastures to their stables at home for the summer. When the animals return from the alpine pastures whole and healthy, they are decorated with various accessories. The honour goes solely to the animals and the shepherds. The Almabtrieb in Jungholz kicks off on 10 September. A Weißwurst breakfast is offered from 9 a.m., before the animals arrive at around 10 a.m.. In addition, a warm-up party will be held the day before. The alpine pasture drives in Grän-Haldensee and Nesselwängle will then follow on 16 and 18 September. Without a marquee but with the largest number of animals, the Almabtrieb in Tannheim concludes on 21 September.
