FIS European Cup Women 2022: Skiing future in St. Anton am Arlberg, Tyrol
After the big names of ski racing faced the Karl Schranz course in St. Anton am Arlberg at the Women's World Cup in early 2021, the young talents are now eagerly awaiting one of the most challenging race courses in the world. On 27 and 28 January 2022, they will compete in the FIS Europacup Women in the Tyrolean mountain village. Locals and guests will have the opportunity to learn a thing or two from the best of the future. The Audi FIS Ski World Cup Women will then return to the Arlberg in early 2023. www.stantonamarlberg.com
The Arlberg has always been a sporty place. The international World Cup circus regularly comes together in St. Anton am Arlberg, which is considered the cradle of alpine skiing. The history goes back almost 100 years. In the winter of 1927, the village youth curved around bamboo poles in a test race, comparable to today's slalom. Enthused by the novel variation, the members of the English Kandahar Ski Club and the Arlberg Ski Club organised a combination competition of slalom and downhill the following year: the Arlberg Kandahar Races were born. They immediately won the respect of the ski world, followed two years later by official recognition by the World Ski Federation FIS. Since then, the famous Arlberg Kandahar Race has taken place at changing venues. In St. Anton am Arlberg, the pros now compete on the Karl Schranz Kandahar course on the Kapall, and it's a tough one: the average gradient of 34 per cent ensures speeds of up to 130 km/h.
Above St. Anton am Arlberg. St. Anton am Arlberg is considered one of the most renowned winter sports resorts in the world. Piste and freeride fans from more than 50 nations visit the mountain village and its ski area every year, with a total of more than 300 kilometres of marked downhill runs, 200 kilometres of off-piste variants and 88 lifts and cable cars. The Arlberg Arena stretches from St. Anton in Tyrol via Lech and Zürs to Warth and Schröcken in Vorarlberg. Cross-country skiing, tobogganing or a tour on one of the most beautiful winter climbing routes in the Alps are just as much a part of St. Anton am Arlberg as events with cult character, international World Cup races or the multi-award-winning Tyrolean cuisine. The "cradle of alpine skiing" is also a founding member of "Best of the Alps", the quality association of the 13 top alpine destinations.
