Six top ski areas and more than 900 kilometres of pistes offer winter sports enthusiasts the personal ultimate
Skiing beginner or crack? Do you prefer enjoyable or ambitious skiing? With or without family in tow? The Kitzbühel Alps, with their holiday paradises full of character, versatile offers and unmistakable flair, offer the perfect downhill run for everyone. What the six ski areas have in common: They all enjoy a world reputation when it comes to piste quality, snow safety and modern lift facilities. From the SkiWelt Wilder Kaiser - Brixental in the west to KitzSki in Kitzbühel / Kirchberg and the St. Johann in Tirol ski area to the Skicircus Saalbach Hinterglemm Leogang Fieberbrunn, the Buchensteinwand-Bergbahn Pillersee and the Steinplatte Waidring - Winkelmoosalm in the east. www.kitzalps.com
SkiWelt Wilder Kaiser - Brixental, with its 288 kilometres of pistes, is right at the top of the Champions League of ski resorts and is best accessed from Hopfgarten or Itter. The ingenious thing about it is that the slopes slope down in all directions. No matter what time of the year or day: you can always be on the sunny side if necessary. One of the best places to stop (among 80 options) is the summit restaurant Hohe Salve. The terrace and the "Umadum Stubn" rotate on their own axis - with dumpling soup and Kaiserschmarrn you get the 360-degree panorama for free.
The KitzSki Kitzbühel/Kirchberg area is the place to be: high celebrity factor, après-ski on a high level, a living legend. The Alpine Ski World Cup was born here. The legendary Hahnenkamm races over the Streif take place every year in January. Shortly thereafter, the cracks can race down the slopes themselves. There are a total of 188 kilometres to choose from in what is, according to skiresort.de, the best skiing area in the world.
Particularly ambitious winter sports enthusiasts can explore the two top ski areas in one go. Since last winter season, the newly merged KitzSkiWelt Tour has been enticing skiers - the longest ski circuit in the world: 88 kilometres of downhill skiing and more than 17,000 metres of altitude difference to master.
Just a few kilometres away, the Johann in Tirol ski area will delight anyone who wants to combine skiing with pleasure: Family-run huts with excellent cuisine and service on the mountain, hotels and guesthouses right on the edge of the slopes - and always the frontal mega view of the Wilder Kaiser. Families in particular feel at home here. 42 fine kilometres of pistes are manageable and yet offer plenty of variety. Tip for the first skiing attempts: the Lärchenhof ski lift in Erpfendorf. On the practice slope with two kilometres of piste, you're on your own. Unless the Hahnenkamm race is coming up and the slalom ski stars are training here.
Sporty skiers plan a side trip to the Skicircus Saalbach Hinterglemm Leogang Fieberbrunn. The cross-state region not only combines 270 kilometres of downhill runs, 70 modern lifts and 60 cosy, stylish huts, but also one feeling: the spirit of the Home of Lässig - or in other words: the individual feeling of happiness. Around Fieberbrunn there are varied pistes and fantastic deep-snow descents. No wonder: Fieberbrunn is located in the Pillerseetal, one of the snowiest regions in Tyrol. That's why there is also a lot of powder off the slopes, which, like in the entire Kitzbühel Alps, offer the best conditions thanks to exemplary snow management.
Locals also like to treat themselves to a ride through the terrain above St. Jakob in Haus. You can't miss it, because the Jakobskreuz, visible from afar, is enthroned on the summit - the largest accessible summit cross in the world. The Buchensteinwand - Bergbahn Pillersee maintains 22 relaxed kilometres of slopes here. In the Pletzi children's park down at the valley station, ski dwarves have fun, and every Wednesday there is a varied children's play festival with snowtubing, skidoo train and face painting.
If you're out and about with teens, you should definitely try out what the Bergbahnen Steinplatte Waidring - Winkelmoosalm has to offer. For freeskiers and snowboarders, the legendary snow park is an absolute hit. Regular skiers, on the other hand, will be delighted with 42 kilometres of piste - and numerous wide slopes that are perfect for carving. If you like, you can cross borders from time to time, because the ski area is located in the "border triangle" of Tyrol, Salzburg and Bavaria.
If you want to explore all six ski areas and experience your very own perfect descent, it's best to choose the SuperSkiCard - the admission ticket to a total of 2750 kilometres of pistes, more than 900 of which are in the so-called core area of the Kitzbühel Alps. The three-day variant is available from 208 euros per person in the main season.
The Kitzbühel Alps - these are the four regions Hohe Salve, Brixental, St. Johann in Tirol and PillerseeTal with 20 villages that have retained their Tyrolean charm. These include well-known names such as Hopfgarten, Kirchberg, St. Johann in Tirol and Fieberbrunn. An absolute strength of the destination lies in its extensive range of offers for families and sports enthusiasts. The modern ski areas with more than 900 kilometres of slopes in the core area of the Kitzbühel Alps are among the best in the world.
Guest card is valid as a train and S-Bahn ticket: All holidaymakers in the four Kitzbühel Alps regions can use local transport with a valid guest card. It is valid for trains (REX) and suburban trains on the route from Wörgl to Hochfilzen.
