50. Ausgabe des Gletscherflohmarsches am 7. August

Updated 28.07.2022

Since its premiere in 1971, the Glacier Flea March from Obergurgl to Vent has thrilled participants from all over the world. On Sunday, 7 August, the organisers invite you to the anniversary edition in the Ötztal.

An event that promotes cooperation between the ski clubs in Gurgl and Vent. This was the basic idea at the beginning of the 1970s, from which the Gletscherflohmarsch developed. The then SC Gurgl chairman Gotthard Scheiber walked the route with his treasurer and defined the route from Obergurgl (1,930 m) to the Ramolhaus (3,006 m) via the Ramoljoch (3,200 m) to Vent (1,900 m), which still exists today. When setting the time limits, however, they underestimated the athleticism of the starters. Because already at the premiere the gold medals ran out at the finish. Too many of the participants completed the demanding 16-kilometre route and 1,350 metres of altitude difference in less than four hours. Over the decades, new best times have always been set. The current course record holder is Matthias Auer from Ötztal, who ran the distance in a time of 1:55:17 hours in 2019

Regardless of individual top performances, the value of the Gletscherflohmarsch lies above all in encouraging people to consciously see nature and the landscape. And because of the event, to leave their personal comfort zone in movement with like-minded people. A total of more than 200 athletes in all age groups start every year. For five decades, Ötztal holidaymakers in particular have made use of this opportunity to experience the natural beauty from Gurgl to Vent in a sporty yet enjoyable way.

The eponymous glacier flea has accompanied the Volksmarsch since the early years. The posters with the mascots were particularly popular and guests liked to take them home as memorabilia.
