On the first weekend in August, the who's who of the international trail running scene will be out and about on the roof of Tyrol to compete in one of the most popular trail runs in the Alps. This is proven by the fact that the Pitz Alpine Glacier Trail 2022 is already sold out for the fifth time in a row. The 200 additional places added for the anniversary were also gone within hours. Participants from all countries are once again taking part, including Spain, Brazil, Estonia, Sweden and the USA in addition to our neighbouring countries. So there is worldwide interest. No wonder, as the race impresses with breathtaking panoramic views and altitudes of over 3,000 metres, including sunrise on the Pitztal Glacier.
The infrastructure with camps, partner hotels, trail running map, trail running parkour, training routes and GPS data, which has grown over the past ten years, makes the Pitztal a centre of excellence for trail running. The stage trail run (with up to four overnight stays and luggage transport) is also becoming increasingly popular. A new addition to the programme is the Run & Climb offer. With running shoes up to the start of the alpine climb, accompanied by a mountain guide of course.
The Salomon Ultra - the supreme discipline over 105 kilometres and 6100 metres in altitude - starts in the night from 5 to 6 August, more precisely from 11 pm in the Elite, Ambitious and Pleasure Run categories. The best runners will complete the course in just over 13 hours. The absolute highlight is the P 45 - Glacier Trail, the highest marathon in the Alps, which leads over the Pitztal Glacier. There are seven competition categories in total. There is also a special obstacle course for children aged three and over.
But the trail event is not only a fixed date in the diary for participants. For the 10th anniversary, guests can once again look forward to a varied programme: product tests from SALOMON, Adidas and other sports brands both in Trail City Mandarfen and at Rifflsee in a breathtaking setting, Trail Food Festival with various food trucks and, of course, the European Trail Running Symposium on Friday.
"With the Trail Running Symposium, the year-round trail running destination Pitztal offers a unique platform for the exchange of knowledge in the field of trail running," says Gerhard Gstettner, Managing Director of the Pitztal Tourism Association. "We are not only event organisers, but also have the necessary expertise, like all good product providers. This is another building block in our overall offering for trail runners and athletes."
In the valley, you are already at around 1700 metres and the air gets thinner and thinner towards the Pitztal Glacier (3440 m). Whether beginner or athlete. If you want to try out this trend sport, you can get a taste of it for free with the Pitztal Summer Card.
