Updated 06.09.2021

Simone Raatz from Germany runs the best time of the day in the women's race. A total of 18 new world champions were crowned at the 20th Masters Mountain Running World Championships in the Stubaital. Germany won the most medals.

The 20th Masters Mountain Running World Championships, which took place for the second time after 2014 on the course of the Schlickeralmlauf in Telfes in the Stubaital, was successfully held on 4 September 2021 in sunny autumn weather. It was a mega running weekend with a real monster programme: races in 42 age groups with almost 800 participants and 18 world championship decisions were handled on two days. Fastest man at the finish line on Saturday and world champion in the M40 class was Thomas Roach, a Briton living in Tyrol. In the women's category, Simone Raatz from Germany ran the fastest time of the day and thus also secured the world championship title in the W45 category. Germany is also the strongest nation with the most gold medals in the individual and team rankings.

Seven years after the first Masters Mountain Running World Championships were held in the Stubaital, the organisational team around the Telfes Sports Club once again showed that it is absolutely equipped to host such a major event. The 20th Masters Mountain Running World Championship will go down in the history of mountain running not only because of the excellent running weather against the backdrop of the Dolomites of North Tyrol, the Kalkkögeln.

Ladies on the short course and men on the long course of the Schlickeralm Run

Participants from more than 20 nations took on the tried and tested course of the Schlickeralm Run in nine age groups each for women and men, starting at 35 and going up to 79 years of age. The start was every 20 minutes. The women's age groups and the men's age groups from 55 upwards started the race at the middle station of the Kreuzjochbahn in the Schlick 2000 hiking centre in Fulpmes. They had to complete a distance of 7.4 kilometres and 775 metres in altitude. The fastest lady over this distance was Simone Raatz from Germany. The runner from ASC Darmstadt crossed the finish line in 44:29.7 minutes, thus taking the day's victory and at the same time the world championship title in the women's class W45. The fastest man on this course and World Champion in the men's class W55 was the Italian Franco Torresani.

The long course from the centre of Telfes had to be completed by four age groups among the men and the participants of the open Schlickeralm run. Thomas Roach from Great Britain was the fastest to conquer the 11.5 kilometres and 1,157 metres of altitude difference. He took the world championship title in the M40 class with a time of 58:05.5 minutes. Best Austrian and third fastest man of the day was Simon Lechleitner with a time of 1:01:31.8 hours.

Sun and precious metal rain for Germany

The weather in the Stubaital was also like a world champion this weekend. In front of the sunny backdrop of the Kalkkögel, it was mainly the participants from Germany who brought rain. But in the form of gold medals. In total, the athletes from our neighbouring nation won six gold medals in the individual classification and nine gold medals in the team classification.

Children's races, charity run and Telfer Wiesen Run

One day before the World Championships all ambitious young runners had the chance to show what they are made of. Almost 100 children in twelve age groups from five to 15 years of age took part in the ASVÖ Children's Runs on different distances through the village of Telfes.

In between, everyone was able to run a few laps for a good cause at the ZIPFER charity run. This year, more than 1,300 euros were raised in one hour.

In the evening, 38 runners took part in the Telfer Wiesen Run, an eight-kilometre forest and meadow run. The fastest lady here was the Austrian Ines Mayer with 37:52.6 minutes and the fastest man was Christian Sieben from Germany with 33:52.7 minutes.
