After a break due to Corona, the Brenner Base Tunnel Information Centre in Steinach am Brenner has been completely updated and made more attractive.
On the first weekend in July, all interested parties and fans of the Brenner Base Tunnel project were able to get an idea of the comprehensive relaunch of the tunnel worlds. The newly designed "Tunnel Worlds" information centre was visited by almost 300 people from 02.07 to 04.07.2021. BBT SE used the period of closure due to Covid-19 to make the information centre in the Wipptal valley even more appealing with many new exhibits and to bring all content up to date. Martin Gradnitzer, CEO of BBT SE, and Josef Hautz, mayor of the market town of Steinach, officially opened the doors of the exhibition centre again on Friday, 2 July, in the presence of numerous students. Until the end of July 2021, the Infocentre will still be open from Tuesday to Friday; from 01.08.2021, a visit will again be possible every day except Mondays from 10.00 - 17.00.
More than 10 additional exhibits and a complete thematic update now make it even more fun to interactively explore interesting facts about the construction of the Brenner Base Tunnel. The new highlights include a railway technology display tunnel showing the equipment of the future railway tunnel under the Alps or, in the outdoor area, the drill head of a tunnel boring machine, which illustrates the dimensions of these tunnelling tools. A special attraction for children is the railway simulator, in whose driver's cab you can travel from the Brenner to Innsbruck. Adults, on the other hand, are thrilled by the so-called "route model", which provides comprehensive information on the entire project route from north to south via touchscreen.
To ensure that information about the Brenner Base Tunnel does not only take place indoors, the Wipptal Tourist Association offers guided hikes every Tuesday throughout the summer as part of the free weekly programme under the theme "Tunnel construction up close". It takes about 2.5 hours to walk around the Padastertal, an uninhabited side valley of the Wipptal. Here the excavated material for the tunnel is stored in a landfill. Participants will receive information about the construction of the Brenner Base Tunnel and the railway history of the Wipptal directly on site.
