In the 2018/19 academic year, around 60 students at MCI took the opportunity to acquire additional skills and knowledge in areas such as responsible management, digital communication, digital marketing, entrepreneurship, scientific data management, international career skills, etc. alongside their regular studies. Due to the great importance of the internet and social media, these extracurricular skills are no longer confirmed with conventional certificates, but with "digital badges", which provide advantages for successful career entry.
"Digital badges are digital certificates or badges that describe and qualitatively document acquired skills. In contrast to traditional certificates in paper form, badges can be collected in a virtual backpack and distributed online as required. For example, badges can be imported into a personal Linkedin profile at the touch of a button; interested employers or project partners can use the badge to find out more about the skills acquired, the corresponding certificate and the issuing institution. This is not about grades, but about the competences that the badge holder has acquired.
MCI students are delighted with the new opportunity to acquire interesting and valuable skills in addition to their studies and to receive digital proof that can be easily transferred to social media profiles: "Badges help to broaden one's own horizons, take on different perspectives and develop a commitment to self-responsible learning," summarises one enthusiastic participant.
Like other badge pioneers in America and England, the MCI wants to use its badges to motivate students to engage in extracurricular activities and further education. Students have the opportunity to expand their personal skills portfolio with a wide range of key competences alongside their studies. The extracurricular courses are designed and organised by Brigitte Huter (Student & Career Center) and Regina Obexer (Learning Solutions).
