Management Center Innsbruck (MCI) presents an impressive balance sheet on the occasion of the start of the academic year 2018/19. Below you will find selected information on the current status and ongoing developments.
Study programs
As of autumn 2018, several new degree programs will be established at the MCI:
Consecutive:
- Digital Business & Software Engineering (Bachelor of Science; BSc.)
Continuing education:
- Digital Business (Master of Business Administration; MBA)
- Digital Economy & Leadership (Master of Science; MSc)
- Digital Marketing & Analytics (Master of Science; MSc)
This brings the total number of academic programmes to 26 consecutive Bachelor's and Master's programmes (plus 6 continuing education programmes), 16 of which are in the field of Business & Society and 10 in the field of Technology, Life Sciences and IT/Digitalisation.
9 of the 26 consecutive degree programmes as well as all 6 continuing education degree programmes can be completed part-time; in addition, degree programmes that are basically set up in full-time form can be at least partially combined with professional activity ("career-enabling").
10 of the degree programmes are conducted entirely in English.
Students
In autumn 2018, the number of students increased by 2.6% to around 3,260 students. The success or graduation rate is 84%, with graduation generally taking place within the standardised period of study.
In addition, there are about 250-350 students in certificate and Master's programmes in continuing education (excluding seminars and company training).
38% of all students come from abroad, 20% from the provinces, 42% from Tyrol.
The annual tuition fees are 726 euros for students from the EU/EEA region and 10,000 euros for students from EU/EEA third countries in the Bachelor's programme and 14,000 euros in the Master's programme.
Applications
For the start of studies in autumn 2018, 1,200 students were newly admitted to their Bachelor's or Master's programme (excl. continuing education). These were selected from 3,750 applications. This means that only one in 3.1 applications can currently be considered. 2.550 applications have to be rejected - although as a rule they are absolutely qualified.
50% of all applications do not come from Austria but from abroad, 18% from the provinces, 32% from Tyrol. A deposit is collected from applicants from EU third countries in connection with the examination of the application documents.
Graduates
In the academic year 2017/18, 1,000 students will graduate from the MCI (excluding continuing education). This brings the number of graduates to around 11,000 alumni.
Each graduate already has an average of 2.3 job offers at the time of graduation. The demand from the business world for MCI graduates cannot be satisfied at present.
Campus
The MCI is currently spread over 5 main campuses and several smaller secondary campuses across Inns-bruck. The total volume of rented space is around 16,500 m2. Additional rentals are being made on an ongoing basis. The annual rental expenditure amounts to more than 2 million euros with an upward trend.
Against this background, the "MCI Campus" new building project at the Fennerareal in Innsbruck, which has been in the news several times recently, has been pursued for a long time, with the aim of bringing together the dislocated locations and facilitating further growth.
The project is currently being evaluated and its feasibility is being examined. Particular attention is being paid to possible measures to optimise the expected costs and to the bus garage, car garage and sports areas to be built at the same time, taking into account the general conditions under public procurement law.
Research & Development
In the early years, research was only of limited importance due to the time pressure of the intensive development work, but in the meantime the MCI has developed into a strong research partner for industry.
In the meantime, around 100 industry-related research projects are being carried out in the area of Technology & Life Sciences alone. These projects represent a financial third-party funding volume of around 3.5 million euros, some with project durations of several years and an annual growth rate of currently around 15-20%.
The MCI's special research focus is on the realisation of solutions in cooperation with industry, as a largely complementary addition to the primary research goal of gaining knowledge through classical university research.
Of particular interest to research activities at the MCI is the generation of know-how that can be exploited both scientifically and economically in the form of new or optimised products, processes, business models and/or market solutions (contract research, patents, start-ups, etc.).
Participations
Apart from the 100% subsidiary for continuing education and contract research (MCI Internationale Bildung & Wissenschaft GmbH), the MCI investment portfolio now includes shares in 6 companies with a total annual operating performance of 6.1 million euros and a total of 0.75 million euros in represented equity (data partly from 2016).

Digitalisation & Online
Digitisation and online have been among the MCI's declared strategic thrusts for years. In addition to the continuous digitalisation of all work, study and learning processes, several degree programs can now be completed online, which makes it much easier to combine studies, career, family, working abroad, etc., triggers enormous innovation in research, teaching and learning, and opens up additional market opportunities.
Almost 400 students, or 12% of all MCI students, are now studying in so-called online degree programmes. With the newly launched degree programmes, this proportion will continue to increase. In addition, the courses that can be completed in online form will also be further expanded for students in face-to-face courses, which will allow them an increased degree of flexibility and variability.
Doctoral programme
The MCI is particularly pleased with the doctoral programme in management launched in 2017 in cooperation with the University of Antwerp and the Antwerp Management School - both internationally accredited and excellently ranked academic institutions - which leads to the academic degree of "Doctor of Philosophy" or "PhD" and in which 6 students from all over the world were accepted in the first year. As of autumn 2018, a further 9 students will be enrolled in this doctoral programme.
