Elektra 2023

With this production of a gripping masterpiece from the pen of Richard Strauss, Johannes Reitmeier bids farewell to his Innsbruck audience after eleven years of successful directorship. As in Salome, this one-act tragedy by Strauss, first performed in 1909, centres on a woman: Elektra. Ever since Clytemnestra murdered her husband Agamemnon together with her lover Aegisth, her daughter Electra has been seeking revenge. Her brother Orest is to atone for the crime. But even after this deed is done, Electra finds no peace. In the middle of her ecstatic dance of joy, she collapses dead. Inspired by a visit to an impressive performance of Hugo von Hofmannsthal's Elektra play based on the Greek myth, Strauss considered setting it to music. Hofmannsthal knew how to dispel his concerns about the similarity to his previously written Salome with the following words: "The mixture of colours seems to me to be so essentially different in the two materials: In Salome, so much purple and violet [...], in Elektra, on the other hand, a mixture of night and light, black and bright." Strauss translated this atmosphere with tonal colours full of suggestive power. His music is described as "bizarre, at times shrieking and seething". In its uncompromising harshness, it heightens the intensity of Hofmannsthal's qualitatively outstanding literary model and creates a haunting opera evening that lingers long afterward. There are no gods in heaven! ELEKTRA
