Vorfreude hoch 5 auf den Winter: Die 5 Tiroler Gletscher starten in die Saison

Updated 28.09.2022

In the last few days it has been snowing on the glaciers and with the pictures of the snowflakes, the anticipation for the first turns on the slopes is also increasing. Especially at the start of the season, the formula "higher is better" definitely applies. Then you are in exactly the right place on the 5 Tyrolean glaciers: at over 3,000 metres, you are on the slopes of the glacier ski areas in Kaunertal, Pitztal, Sölden, Stubai and Hintertux. Here you will find plenty of space for fun on the slopes. In addition, there are glacier hotels that are ideally suited to skiers, flexible ski passes and lots of fun at the highest level in the snow parks.

While the Hintertux Glacier is always open, the ski season on the Stubai Glacier begins on 30 September 2022. On the Kaunertal and Pitztal Glaciers, you can also take your turns on the perfectly groomed slopes from 1 October 2022. In Sölden, skiing operations will start on 23 September 2022.

The largest part of the CO2 footprint during a winter holiday is still caused by the journey to the resort, which is why Tyrol offers numerous sustainable travel options in winter. The 5 Tyrolean glaciers can be reached very easily and directly by train from Austria, Germany, Switzerland, but also from the Netherlands and Italy. International trains stop directly and regularly at the regional stations Landeck-Zams (for the Kaunertal Glacier), Imst-Pitztal (for the Pitztal Glacier), Ötztal Bahnhof (for Sölden), Innsbruck Hauptbahnhof (for the Stubai Glacier) or Jenbach (for the Hintertux Glacier). The station shuttle, which can be booked online, takes holidaymakers, their luggage and ski equipment to the glacier ski areas in comfort.

Arriving by train from Germany: Guests of the Stubai and Hintertux glaciers, for example, can comfortably use the Nightjet into the snow and then even have the ski pass included in the ticket price. There are also numerous direct ICE and Nightjet connections in winter. You can travel to Tyrol quickly, comfortably and directly with Deutsche Bahn from Hamburg, Cologne, Frankfurt and 7 times daily from Munich to Tyrol.

Arriving by train from Austria: With 16 daily direct ÖBB connections from Vienna with stops in St. Pölten, Linz and Salzburg, Tyrol is ideally connected by train. The journey time is just under four hours. There are two daily direct connections from Graz. New from 11 December 2022 is the direct connection (3x daily) of the WESTbahn from Vienna to Innsbruck.

Arriving by train from Switzerland: The ÖBB/SBB runs a total of 7 times daily from Zurich to Tyrol.

The best way to get to the ski areas is to take the ski buses, which you can use for free with a valid ski pass - no need for a car. For all those who don't want to do without a car and are ideally already travelling with an e-car, there are numerous charging points in the glacier regions for recharging.

With the "White5" ski pass, which is available this season from 1 October 2022 to 15 May 2023, you have all five glaciers on one card. It can be used for ten days during the entire validity period - for all facilities in the winter and glacier ski area of Sölden and on the Kaunertal, Pitztal, Stubai and Hintertux glaciers. In addition, the White5 is maximally flexible: the ten days can be redeemed on one or all five Tyrolean glaciers, as desired in one piece or with individual ski days. This system can be compared to a ten-day block for the swimming pool. The White5 is valid in the coming season from 1 October 2022 to 15 May 2023 at a price of 542 euros.

A good tip for all 5 Tyrolean glaciers: book your ski pass online in advance. This saves you queuing at the ticket office and gets you on the slopes faster.

Sölden, Pitztal and Kaunertal also offer the dynamic pricing system for online tickets. The motto is "the earlier, the cheaper". This means that the price increases daily until the ski day, shortly before that the online and box office price are the same. So early bookers can save. Not only money, but also time that would otherwise have been spent buying tickets at the ticket office. With the option of the cancellation guarantee for three euros per ski pass day when buying a multi-day pass, you are well covered for an unexpected loss of visit in Sölden, Pitztal and Kaunertal. Thanks to this cancellation guarantee, unused ski passes are refunded up to five days before the first ski pass day without giving reasons. Incidentally, the six-day ski pass in Sölden purchased online is much more than just admission to skiing fun: it even includes admission to the Top Mountain Motorcycle Museum and the James Bond experience world 007 ELEMENTS as a free extra during the validity period of the ski pass.

They are as varied as the skiing experiences you can have on the slopes of the 5 Tyrolean glaciers - the glacier hotels. They are called Gletscherhotels because they are perfectly adapted to the needs of skiers. The glacier packages are particularly favourable and include winter services (ski safe, boot depot in the ski cellar, etc.) as well as free charging stations for electric cars, wellness offers and rental offers (ski accessories, backpacks, sledges, children's ski accessories, etc.). All participating businesses can be found at www.gletscherhotels.at.

The Betterpark Hintertux is probably the first snowpark in Europe to start the season and celebrates its opening from 30 September to 3 October 2022. The Snowpark Kaunertal, the X Park on the Pitztal Glacier and the Snowpark Stubai Zoo start a little later - they all open the park season in October at the latest, depending on snow conditions.

The Kaunertal Snowpark is the longest in Europe, with the longest jib line in the Alps, and it also has a lot to offer with bordercross, kicker, waverides, wallride and pro lines. There are various snowpark events at regular intervals on the Kaunertal Glacier: Winter starts for the 37th time with the Kaunertal Opening. The X Park in Pitztal consists of the Fun Park with Family Cross, Funline and Waveline as well as the largest and highest ski touring park in Austria powered by DYNAFIT. It is located between the mountain and middle station of the Mittelbergbahn and offers three ski touring routes with various degrees of difficulty. The Betterpark Hintertux is the highest freestyle spot in Austria. Freestylers can look forward to perfect jumps, a constantly changing jib setup and a half pipe. Things get going here on the first weekend in October. The Stubai Zoo snow park is one of the best snow parks in the Alps: the entire terrain with pro, medium, jib and easy lines is one of the biggest snow parks in the world and scores with maximum variety and perfect shape. Throughout the autumn, the Snowpark Stubai Zoo is the training base for the international pro scene of freeskiers and snowboarders as part of the Prime Park Sessions. A special highlight is offered to visitors in November, as the sixth edition of the F.I.S. Freeski World Cup Stubai will take place from 16 to 19 November 2022, bringing together the world's freeskiing elite.
