Book presentation: Alpine history Gschnitztal

Updated on 10.06.2022

In the mountaineering village of Gschnitztal, the booklet "Alpine history in a nutshell - Gschnitztal" was presented at a festival on Whit Sunday, 5 June 2022, in the mill village in Gschnitz against a magnificent backdrop.

Many interested visitors from Trins and Gschnitz, but also from further afield, were on hand to listen to the stories and learn interesting details about the valley's past. The programme was very varied: in addition to a beautiful musical accompaniment by the "Burgschöfler" and good culinary catering by the Mühlendorf team, there was a short reading from the book by author Judith Hammer.

In the afternoon, the programme included a "Hoangaschtrunde" with locals. They shared their memories of the past, for example on the topics of mountain mowers, avalanche accidents, room hire and mountain hut management. Between the mills there was a small craft and farmers' market and the children also got their money's worth, as an exciting quiz organised by the conservation area management, a herbal workshop and an alpaca hike awaited them.

A new exhibition with 30 panels on various chapters of Alpine history and many comparative pictures from the past and present was installed in the mill village especially for the book presentation and will be on display throughout the summer. Next year, the exhibition is expected to move to Trins.

The work is intended to provide guests and locals with a deeper insight into the development of Alpine tourism in the communities. On 120 pages, visitors can learn about the history of the villages of Trins and Gschnitz, special places such as St. Magdalena, local legends, early Alpine tourism, mountain guiding, the first ascents of the highest peaks, the history of the mountain huts, sections and the local mountain rescue service, as well as the later development of summer and winter tourism. The texts are supplemented with many historical and old photos taken by private individuals, from the collections of national libraries or from the archives of Alpine clubs.

Alpingeschichte Gschnitztal is available from € 4.00 from the municipal offices in Trins and Gschnitz as well as from the mountaineering village partner businesses, the mountain huts, the Tyrolia bookshop in Steinach, the Wipptal tourism association in Steinach and the Austrian Alpine Club online shop.
